Dearica Hamby, a professional basketball player in the WNBA hailing from Los Angeles, recently expressed her frustration on Instagram regarding the Las Vegas Aces’ decision to trade her.
She claimed that the team “sold” her due to their concerns about her potentially becoming pregnant again. Hamby strongly criticized this behavior, referring to it as both “bullying and lying” on the part of the Aces.
On Saturday, January 21, the Los Angeles Sparks acquired Hamby, a two-time WNBA All-Star. The Sparks tweeted that they would also receive a First Round Pick in the 2024 draft as part of the Hamby trade.
At 29, Hamby is married to basketball star Alonzo Nelson-Ododa. The couple experienced the joy of becoming parents for the first time in February 2017 when their daughter, Amaya, was born.
They have since welcomed a second child into their family. The Daily Mail reported that Hamby revealed her pregnancy publicly during the 2022 WNBA Championship Parade.
Who is Dearica Hamby’s Husband?
Alonzo Nelson-Ododa, 29, originally from Atlanta, Georgia, attended Norcross High School before pursuing his basketball career. He continued his education at the University of Richmond, where he played for the Richmond Spiders and obtained a degree in political science.
Nelson-Ododa later joined the Pittsburgh Panthers before venturing into the Danish Superliga, specifically the Denmark – Ligaen, where he played as a center for Team FOG Naestved. As of 2022, Nelson-Ododa appears to be taking a break from basketball as he is currently not signed with any team.
Nelson-Ododa’s dad, Sebastian, is also a former basketball player who represented the national team of Kenya. He was associated with Huntington University in Indiana from 1989 to 1992.
Alonzo’s younger sister, Olivia, is an up-and-coming basketball player competing for the Los Angeles Sparks. Additionally, their 19-year-old sibling, Isaiah, is pursuing a professional basketball career as a forward for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles while working towards a mechanical engineering degree.
In Hamby’s Instagram statement, she expressed her love and gratitude to the city of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Aces fans, and her teammates. She acknowledged the support she received from them and emphasized her appreciation for their kindness towards her, her daughter, and her family.
Hamby mentioned her commitment to the team and her desire to stay in Las Vegas until facing negative comments that prompted her to speak out. She acknowledged the importance of the fans in shaping her journey and expressed her determination to bring a championship to Las Vegas.
Hamby discussed her experiences of being “bullied, manipulated, and discriminated against.” She clarified that while being traded is part of the business, being subjected to deception, mistreatment, and discrimination is unacceptable.
Hamby claimed that promises made to her as incentives for signing a contract extension were not fulfilled, leading to attacks on her character and work ethic.
Addressing the accusation that she knowingly signed her contract extension while pregnant, Hamby refuted the claim as false. She explained that concerns were raised about her commitment to the team, with implications that she would become pregnant again.
Hamby questioned whether the team expected her to promise not to get pregnant. She mentioned being asked about planning her pregnancy and then told that she was not taking precautions to avoid getting pregnant. The decision to trade her was allegedly justified by the assertion that she wouldn’t be ready and the team needed bodies.
