What is a computer port?

1. USB ports

USB ports i.e Universal serial bus port is the common port every laptop or a computer has. The main purpose of a USB port is to transfer data or files between computers and other devices like printers, scanners, smartphones, etc. It also serves as a charging point for smartphones. The USB port is also used to connect other peripherals like keyboards and mouse.

USB ports do not enable the display facilities. It doesn’t have video standards. Though, it can facilitate a connection to a computer monitor using an adapter or through Universal docking station with DisplayLink Technology.

USB ports have different versions and types. And let me tell you versions and types are two different concepts. USB ports are of 3 types i.e USB Type-A, USB Type-B, and USB Type-C. And USB Type-A is a 4 pin connector that comes in different versions i.e USB 1.1, USB 2, USB 3, USB 3.0.

2. USB- Type C

USB-type C is the recent specification of the USB family which is a reversible connector. That means we can connect the cable to the USB port with any of the sides. It is slimmer and smaller as compared to its former USB Type-A and USB Type-B. USB Type-C transfers data at higher speeds and current. It can charge devices up to 100 watts of power. The laptops have also become slimmer therefore they are enabled with USB Type-C ports.

3. Ethernet Port Rj-45

Ethernet Port Rj – 45 is also known as the Registered Jack ethernet port which comes with an 8-pin and 8-contact connector. This port is used to connect to the network cable to a computer that enables the use of the Internet. The cable plugged into this port can lead to a network hub, cable modem, DSL modem. Some of the latest Ethernet ports come with led lights to indicate packet detection and transmission. The latest Ethernet technology supports a data transfer rate of 10 gigabits per second.

4. HDMI Port

HDMI port which is a full form of High definition media interface. As the name suggests, it is a digital interface that connects high definition and ultra definition devices like monitors, HDTVs, gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, etc. HDMI is used to carry video and audio signals. The HDMI connector is made up of 19 pins and can carry the video signal up to a resolution of 4096 *2160 and 32 audio channels.

SD card reader port is used to transfer data from an sd card. The way we used sd cards on our mobile phones the same way it is used in laptops and computers too. We can transfer photos easily from the sd card to our computer as it is handy and portable. If your laptop has no sd card reader port, you can buy a USB-based external card reader.

6. Display Port

DisplayPort is a replacement of VGA and DVI ports as the main interface between computer and monitor. It is also quite similar to HDMI port as it transfers video and audio signals and other types of data too to external devices. Today’s laptop comes with a mini display port or a standardized display port.

7. DVI Port

DVI i.e Digital video interface port is an ideal port to connect to TV monitors because most of the display monitors come with either DVI or VGA connectors. It is a high-speed digital interface that was developed with the aim of sending lossless digital signals replacing analog VGA technology. There are 3 types of DVI ports based on the signals they transmit. DVI-I is a DVI port integrated with analog and digital signals. DVI-D is a port that transmits only digital signals and DVI-A supports only analog signals.

8. VGA

VGA port i.e Video Graphics Array is a port found on desktop computers and monitors. This analog connection transmits video signals from CPU to the monitor. Now VGA ports are replaced with DIVI ports. Now you will only find VGA ports in a projector. The only problem with the VGA port is that they cannot transmit HD videos.  They can only transmit video up to a resolution of 1920 * 1200.

9. Audio Jack

Audio Jack are ports that you will find in most of the computers, laptops, and smartphones. The audio jack is also known as the headphone jack and they come with a standardized size of 3.5 mm. Iphones and Pixel smartphones do not come with an audio jack.

10. Thunderbolt

The Thunderbolt port is quite similar to USB- Type C ports. It evolved from the mini display port connector to a port shaped like USB C. And the amazing part is, it is also compatible with cables and devices made for USB C. Thunderbolt 3 transfers at a speed of 40 Gbps.
